The Need – and Opportunity – for Revitalization Planning

Over the last few years, downtown Claysville has lost multiple establishments which were family-owned and operated. These businesses served our area for many years and even decades. Because Claysville is the only main street business district in the McGuffey School District, this has been a substantial loss for the region as a whole.

A thriving business district helps to keep our residents from moving away and draws people both to live and to visit. There is a need to promote our existing businesses and to attract new business and employment opportunities.

Recently, Marcellus shale development has brought many economic benefits to our region. But without strong local businesses, those resources will not ultimately stay in our communities. There is a need for a greater diversity of businesses to sustain southwestern Washington County in the long term.

Residents know well that southwestern Washington County is a desirable place to live, work, and play – with beautiful natural and agricultural landscapes, growing opportunities for recreation, and safe, pleasant communities rich with history. Every month, over 1.3 million vehicles travel through our region on I-70 and the National Road. There is incredible opportunity to welcome visitors to stop and see all that our region has to offer.

Revitalizing Claysville and the Region
Sprowls Hardware closed after over a century of serving the Claysville Area – a loss for downtown Claysville that is felt by us all.

Early Successes
Our municipalities and community organizations have a bigger impact when they work together. The partners who have had many successful small projects improving Main Street, the Community Center, and McGuffey Community Park are ready to think big with the Claysville Area Master Revitalization Plan.

The Beginnings of the Claysville Area Master Revitalization Plan

Our community organizations have been working for many years to improve the quality of life and boost the economy in and around Claysville. The Claysville Area Preservation and Revitalization Initiative (CAPRI), the Borough of Claysville, and Donegal Township have seen initial success with several specific short-term projects.

Through numerous conversations with business owners and government officials, we have found that there is great potential to revitalize our community and stimulate economic growth and development. To realize that potential, community leaders must collaborate around a common vision of revitalizing our area – a vision that incorporates the energy and ideas of our citizens.

The Claysville Area Master Revitalization Plan is the next step in crafting a vision to holistically address growth, change, preservation, tourism, revitalization, and development in the area.
