Why It’s #Good2bHRG

Professional Development

HRG gives you the freedom and the support you need to define your own career path. We are a team-driven atmosphere, and we value the contributions of each team member. If you are a person with passion and ideas who loves to solve problems, HRG is the place for you.

We are committed to helping our talent grow in their abilities and their professional success, so we reimburse costs associated with:

  • College Tuition
  • Training courses
  • Professional memberships

We also promote from within and provide ample opportunity for advancement.

Our company president began his career at HRG as an intern.

More than half of our senior managers began their career here as an entry level intern, technician or staff professional.

I’ve been fortunate to do an MBA program in the evenings and part-time, using our tuition reimbursement program. It’s been really beneficial for me, and I think I’ve been able to add value to the organization. I’ve just been very happy that they’ve invested in me, and I think the company is getting a return out of that.

Ryan Albright
Director of Marketing

People have been very supportive of me and my growth. They champion me, send me to training, and trust me with responsibility.

Liz Lackey
Team Leader | Water & Wastewater

You can specialize if you want; you can grow into extra areas if you want. As long as you’re willing to learn and take on responsibility, the growth opportunities are unending at HRG.

Aaron Moyer
Team Leader | Civil

As part of the professional engineering licensure, there’s an obligation to have so many credits each year of continuing education. I’ve never had to take a class specifically to meet that because it’s just encouraged at HRG to go out and get training as needed.

Flexibility/Work-Life Balance

The quality of your work is not defined by the number of hours you sit at your desk, so we offer our people ample flexibility in how they approach their workday:

Flexible Scheduling
Team members are able to choose their own schedule around our core work hours and build a plan that works for their lifestyle. This includes an option for Half-Day Fridays.

Paid Time Off (PTO)
New full-time team members receive a generous amount of PTO to use as they see fit. The longer they stay with HRG, the more their PTO will increase.

In the type of work we do, we often have evening meetings, so we’ll be doing stuff at night. The philosophy here is that if you do that, you can take some of that time back later in the week and get time to spend with your family and do other things, where other firms don’t really see it that way.

Mike Hess
Senior Project Manager | Civil

As long as you’re getting your work done and you’re responsive to clients and you can be in contact with your co-workers, we’re pretty flexible here.  There’s a lot of trust that goes back and forth with that type of set-up. It works very well here at HRG.

Employee Ownership and Shared Success

It is not enough to say we have an Employee Stock Ownership Plan. Ownership drives the culture at HRG.

We empower our employee-owners to be actively involved in the success of this firm. We communicate transparently about our strategy and operations, and we welcome ideas from all levels of the organization.

We want the future of our company to be defined by the people who work here (not faceless investors who see HRG as only a line-item on their balance sheet), so we put ownership in the hands of our team.

Every employee-owner, age 21 or over, who completes at least 1,000 hours of service annually is eligible for HRG stock after one year of employment.

We also have a separate 401(K)/Profit Sharing Plan and make discretionary contributions to an employee’s account each year based on the financial success HRG has enjoyed during the previous 12-month period.

I think that the barrier that typically exists between management and employee doesn’t exist at HRG because of the ESOP, so it makes for a more collaborative work environment. It feels like everybody is just there to help.

Raj Moola

When you work hard and you put in the time, it benefits you, and you own a piece of all that you worked for.

Caleb Krauter
Team Leader | Water & Wastewater

Since the ESOP, we’ve really improved lines of communication with other offices. We’re always working together to find solutions and keep projects on schedule.  Every project’s important.  It’s just a matter of prioritizing schedules and workload.

We have a business culture that values its employees. Leaders are transparent and have done a good job showing people how their actions translate into financial success.  I’ve learned a lot about the economics of the business and of running an engineering firm because of the ESOP.

Great People

This is, by far, the number one reason employee-owners cite for why it’s #Good2bHRG. We have the best team in the business.

Our skilled professionals produce award-winning work that helps to define the standard of quality in our industry. Many of our team members have been recognized as leaders in their industry and the business community. (Learn  more about our award-winning projects and people.)

Our people are hard-working and willing to help wherever needed. Our men and women are focused on the success of the company as a whole, so they are willing to work across departmental lines.

Our people are dedicated professionals who are committed to excellence. Team members continue to advance their skills and share their knowledge with the rest of the company. If you need expert advice on how to complete a task for the company or a client, someone on our team has the knowledge, and they will gladly take time out of their schedule to mentor you.

Our people are our family, and we celebrate like a family, too.

We have an annual picnic to celebrate our ESOP valuation and a birthday celebration to commemorate our founding each June.

We celebrate employee-ownership with themed activities throughout October for National ESOP Month.

Our group managers organize fun team-building retreats.

These are just a few of the reasons why HRG has been named one of the Best Places to Work in PA and one of Pittsburgh’s Top Work Places.  Learn more about these and other awards we’ve received

I started out with co-workers that were single and we would go and have happy hours and play softball together. Now we have families, and we’re watching them grow. It’s great to have co-workers who are also your friends and maintain that friendship over many years. You spend more time at work than you do with your family sometimes, so the bonds here, the people, the relationships you built, it’s really great.

Matt Bonanno
Civil Practice Area Leader

I love that the executives around here don’t act like big firm executives. They want to know you personally.  A group of us were going out after work to celebrate a team success, and someone mentioned it to our president, Jason.  He had a long drive back home from visiting our office that day, but he still came out with us.

Caleb Krauter
Team Leader | Water & Wastewater

I joined HRG at the beginning of the shutdown for COVID, and the team culture has made the adjustment so easy for me. The people I work with have really helped me get the hang of company resources and organization. They’re also very talented and skilled at what they do.

Everybody is unified around a common purpose, which is serving the client well. Everyone works together, and it’s a very rewarding experience.

I believe it strengthens HRG's future when we find
talented and passionate people in the early years
of their career and develop them into leaders.
