ELECTRICAL POWER ANALYSIS
Challenge
A Fortune 100 pharmaceutical company in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, had infringed upon the full-load capabilities of its service transformer on several occasions and suffered from voltage drop issues that caused larger motors to drop out at different times.
Solution
HRG performed a power analysis to determine the power distribution throughout the facility and to outline several design alternatives to address these problems.
New alternatives would produce thousands of dollars in energy savings while providing more reliable power without voltage drop outs …
Two of the alternatives we developed would save the company approximately $56,000 per year in electricity costs by relying on primary power (12.47 kV) instead of secondary power (480 V). Our alternatives also addressed the drop out issue by reducing the excessive lengths of cable to affected equipment with the strategic placement of new switchgear. According to our projections, the increased efficiency and annual utility savings gained from this effort would cover the capital costs within five to 10 years.
After careful consideration, the company installed new switchgear to reduce the load on the existing gear as well as reduce cable lengths. The result was more reliable power as well as flexibility for future modifications to the facility and the associated equipment. |
