Freedom Road Corridor Projects – Cranberry Township, Butler County, PA

As Cranberry Township’s Traffic Engineer, Herbert, Rowland & Grubic, Inc. (HRG) completed multiple projects at individual intersections along State Route 3020 (Freedom Road). These projects were completed through both partnerships with PennDOT and the Highway Occupancy Permit process.

Freedom Road: This project consisted of adding an additional through lane in each direction and multiple auxiliary lanes along Freedom Road. Four traffic signals were completely redesigned including ADA accessible pedestrian facilities. The signals were interconnected using fiber optic lines and connected to the State Route (SR) 19 closed loop traffic system and the third leg of the system. An additional northbound left turn lane was created on SR 19. The entire project required only minimal right-of-way acquisition. This project was funded in part by the Township and by the State. PennDOT bid and provided construction inspection services.

Freedom Road and Commonwealth Drive: HRG designed an additional left turn lane, right turn lane, and signal modifications. This project also included the preparation of the complete set of construction plans, signal plans, traffic signal permit specifications and estimate.

Freedom Road and Executive Drive: This project consisted of signal modifications to increase efficiency by adding an additional movement in an existing phase.

Freedom Road and Valley Forge/Parkwood Drive Traffic Signal: Included the design of a new traffic signal with traffic counts, a signal warrant analysis, field survey, signal permit plans, signal construction drawings, specifications, and the development of an engineer’s construction cost estimate. The design also included a provision for emergency vehicle preemption.
