Relocating to Pittsburgh
HRG's Pittsburgh office is located in Cranberry Township, one of the fastest growing communities in the state. This thriving neighborhood, which received the Governor's Award for Local Government Excellence in 1999, offers the virtues of a quiet suburban lifestyle with the advantage of being just a short drive down Interstate 79 from the heart of downtown Pittsburgh.
Consistently Ranked Among the Best Places to Live
Pittsburgh is the only city to be ranked by the Places Rated Almanac as America’s Most Livable City twice (in 1985 and 2007). These annual rankings are based on nine categories: housing affordability, transportation, jobs, education, climate, crime, health care, recreation and ambience, and Pittsburgh rated in the 90th percentile of more than 300 other metropolitan areas across the nation in several of these categories. Other organizations have rated Pittsburgh among the best, too:
- Forbes magazine included Pittsburgh among the world’s 10 cleanest cities.
- An affiliate of the Financial Times named Pittsburgh one of North America’s top three Cities of the Future
- Expansion Management magazine named Pittsburgh one of America’s 50 Hottest Cities.
- Sperling rated Pittsburgh number 3 among 50 U.S. metropolitan areas for lowest crime rates.
- Kiplinger’s Personal Finance rated Pittsburgh among the top 10 smartest cities to live and work.
Making the American Dream Affordable
Forbes magazine recently rated Pittsburgh among the top 10 cities with the lowest cost of living, and housing typically sells for nearly half the national average here. In fact, the city has one of the lowest costs of living among metropolitan areas in the Northeast, according to the Consumer Price Index compiled by the Federal Bureau of Labor and Statistics.
Great Place to Raise a Family
Sperling rated Pittsburgh among the top 10 best cities to relocate your family based on the area’s low cost of living and crime rates, educational opportunity and mild climate as well as its thriving cultural scene and access to world class health care. The city also offers ample opportunities for family fun such as Kennywood amusement park, the Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium, the National Aviary, the Pittsburgh Children’s Museum, and the Carnegie Science Center.
City of Champions
To serious sports fans, the Pittsburgh region is an exciting place to call home. Five Super Bowl rings for the Steelers, five World Series titles for the Pirates, and two Stanley Cups for the Penguins have given the city its nickname as the City of Champions. Both the Steelers and the Pirates play in new state-of-the-art stadiums overlooking the heart of downtown, and the Pirates’ home (PNC Park) is consistently rated one of the best ballparks in the nation.
But Pittsburgh is not just tops among spectator sports, it’s also a great place to experience the outdoors firsthand. National Geographic Adventure named it one of seven Adventure Cities and featured it as one of the top 30 places to live and play. Among the area’s best recreational features are its three rivers (offering ample opportunity for fishing, boating, kayaking and rafting) and its extensive network of hiking and biking trails.
Culture for Everyone
From the historical (e.g. the Senator John Heinz Pittsburgh Regional History Center, the Carnegie Museum of Natural History) to the scientific (e.g. the Carnegie Science Center) to the off-the-wall (e.g. The Andy Warhol Museum, the Mattress Factory, the Wood Street Galleries), Pittsburgh has a museum for everybody – even the little ones (e.g. the Pittsburgh Children's Museum).
In fact, American Style magazine named Pittsburgh the best arts destination among mid-sized U.S. cities in 2007. Those looking to be entertained will not be disappointed either with the wide variety of musical acts who visit Mellon Arena each year or the thriving theater district, which showcases everything from Broadway's biggest hits at the CLO to lesser known works by local playwrights.
Education
With such a lively culture, it's no wonder Pittsburgh is home to some of the nation's most prestigious colleges and universities, including Carnegie Mellon and Duquesne. More than a dozen other colleges and technical institutes are located nearby, as well.
