Relocating to Dunmore

When most people think of Northeastern Pennsylvania, they think of the mountains and snow sports like skiing and snowboarding. If that’s your idea of fun, then Dunmore certainly won’t disappoint. After all, it is less than 10 miles from Sno Mountain Ski Resort, which is home to one of the most challenging slopes in the region, nicknamed White Lighting. However, you can find plenty to do – whether it be sports, arts, or entertainment – all year round.

The Great Outdoors
The Borough of Dunmore is located in Lackawanna County less than two miles from the City of Scranton and is just two hours from the night life and excitement of Philadelphia and Manhattan. Like the rest of Northeastern Pennsylvania, the area is known for its winter sports, but it also features miles of mountain biking trails and some of the best fishing holes in the state. For example, the nearby Lackawanna River is a Class A Wild Brown Trout Stream to which people travel from all over the country to cast their line. Lake Wallenpaupack is also a popular recreational destination for fishing, swimming, boating, and camping.

Golf aficionados will enjoy the low green fees in the area – which average just $32 for a full 18 holes with golf cart rental – and the sheer abundance of courses. All told, there are 36 public courses and four private courses within an hour’s drive. Among these courses is the Elmhurst Country Club, which hosts a PGA tour event, and Glenmaura National Golf Club, which previously hosted the PGA tour.

For those who prefer spectator sports, the Dunmore/Scranton area plays host to several teams that offer affordable family fun: a AAA affiliate of the New York Yankees, a minor-league affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins, and an arena football team, the Pioneers.

Culture
But if sports are not your passion, you could spend an evening enjoying today’s hottest bands in concert at area venues like the Toyota Pavilion at Montage Mountain and the Wachovia Arena. You could also take in the quieter atmosphere of the many blues shows hosted by the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Blues Association or bring on the noise at one of 10 clubs in downtown Scranton. In addition, Masonic Temple in Scranton plays host to many off-broadway touring productions.

During the day, you could expand your horizons at one of several museums in the area, which are dedicated to such diverse topics as the history of coal mining, vintage cars, vintage steam engines, trolleys, and the magic of Harry Houdini.

Safe, Affordable Place to Raise a Family
Yet, Dunmore and Scranton are not just great places to visit for recreation and entertainment; they’re also a great place to make your start in life or raise a family, thanks to the low crime rate, commitment to education, and low cost of living.

The average monthly apartment rental rate in the area is between $500 - 800. Those looking to settle down with a family will be glad to know that they can still find a two or three bedroom house in the area’s suburbs for under $100,000 (though the average falls between $125,000 and $175,000).
Regardless of your age or station in life, everyone can appreciate the low crime rate in the region, which is approximately half of the national crime rate.

If you want to enjoy the convenience of having the city nearby while raising a family in a small, close-knit suburban community, then the many small adjoining boroughs that surround Dunmore are exactly what you’re looking for.
