What is a typical day at HRG like for you?
A typical day at HRG can be quite hectic. Each day, brings a new set of tasks and challenges. There are some days that have to be spent working and re-working a layout for a project, while — at the same time — I might also have to get a permit out the door for a different project. Then there are days that are devoted to designing and performing design calculations on the final layout of a project. There is not a day that goes by when I am not challenged or learning something new at HRG.
What brought you to HRG?
During my senior year at Penn College, I contacted HRG in Lewisburg regarding a co-op in order to complete my senior project. HRG was willing to provide me with a co-op opportunity, and, ultimately, I was offered full-time employment. I was very pleased with the knowledge and experience I received during my co-op and had no problem accepting full-time employment at HRG.
What has been your favorite project so far, and what responsibilities did you have on this project?
My favorite project at HRG was an expansion of a manufacturing plant in Montandon, PA. The client was proposing to expand its plant in order to meet the higher demand for its products. This project allowed me to understand the extensive land development process that engineers must abide by in all municipalities and counties. I was responsible for the design and final submission of the entire land development plan.
What do you like best about your job?
The best parts of my job are the challenges that are presented to me. I look forward to the new challenges that are given to me every day. Having these challenges, I can become a more efficient and knowledgeable engineer.
What skills have you gained since you began working at HRG?
The education that is obtained through attending college is totally different than the knowledge that is obtained from actually performing real-life projects. The skills I have learned through my education have not only been broadened while working at HRG but have also been expanded upon. Since I began working at HRG, I have become proficient in working with AutoCAD Land Desktop, HydroCAD and numerous other design programs. The design programs are a great tool but, if you do not have the background knowledge that is obtained from your college education then they are of no great value.
In which areas do you wish to grow?
I wish to grow in all areas of the engineering profession. There is never a time when it would be necessary to stop growing or stop becoming more knowledgable about anything. The more knowledgable a person is perceived, the more respect and confidence they will be given from others.
What would you tell upcoming graduates is the best reason to work for HRG?
HRG will not only provide you with continuous education but will constantly challenge you to better yourself in terms of expertise and skill development. Simply, HRG will grant you all the resources that you need to become who you want to be. It is up to you how far you wish to progress in your career.
