The Intern Experience:
Eileen Garrison
Eileen worked as an intern in the Traffic Group in our Harrisburg office while studying civil engineering at the University of Pittsburgh. Upon graduation, she was hired as a full-time staff professional. Here is what she had to say about the intern experience at HRG.
College:
University of Pittsburgh
Degree:
B.S., Civil Engineering
What was a typical day at HRG like for you during your internship?
My work typically consisted of writing reports like traffic signal warrants, but a lot of the time I helped my co-workers with their work. I also went out in the field frequently to take measurements and set up equipment for collecting traffic data.
What brought you to HRG?
I liked the location because it’s close to my hometown. I also thought everyone was very friendly when I came for my interview, and it seemed like a good work environment.
What was your favorite project as an intern?
I put together a presentation on different intersection improvement alternatives for the Walnut Street/Progress Avenue intersection outside Harrisburg. This presentation was used at a public meeting.
What did you like best about your internship?
My co-workers. I enjoyed coming to work every day because everyone was so friendly and so helpful.
What skills did you gain during your internship?
The classes I took at Pitt had been focused on general civil engineering, so I learned a lot about traffic engineering. I really didn’t know too much about traffic engineering before I started here, and my internship made me think that might be what I wanted to pursue when I graduated. I really enjoyed my work here.
What would you tell upcoming graduates is the best reason to intern for HRG?
HRG is a growing company, but it still feels small. Everyone is very friendly, and it’s easy to ask for help when you have a question. It’s a good place to learn and apply the concepts you learn in class to deliver solutions for real-world problems. |
