Over the years, our firm has been blessed with tremendous success and steady growth. For us, the best part of this success is the ability to give back to our community through a variety of service organizations. The following are just a few of the many organizations we support:
- United Way
- Cystic Fibrosis Foundation
- Children's Miracle Network
- Gittlen Cancer Foundation
- Muscular Dystrophy Association
- National Brownfield Association
- Team PA Foundation
- The Arc of Dauphin and Lebanon Counties
- The Arc of Mercer County Foundation
- United Cerebral Palsy of Central Pennsylvania
- Eichelberger Performing Arts Center
- Channels Food Rescue
- Water Street Rescue Mission
- Music in the Park
- Mon Valley Progress Council
- Diakon Lutheran Social Services
- Northeast PA Manufacturers and Employers Association
In addition, to celebrate the holidays this year, HRG donated money on behalf of our clients to local charities in each of our regions:
- Bethesda Mission in the Harrisburg region
- Penn State University/Milton S. Hershey Medical Center "Four Diamonds Fund" in the Lancaster region
- Second Mile in the State College region
- Adams Rescue Mission in the Gettysburg region
- Make-a-Wish Foundation in the Pittsburgh region
- Burnlee Employment & Rehabilitation Services in the Stroudsburg region

- Salvation Army in the Lewisburg region
HRG also sponsors an annual scholarship of $2,500 to civil engineering students at Penn State University in order to help develop the potential of tomorrow's civil engineering leaders.
To us, giving back to our community means more than writing a check. Our employees provide hands-on support and give generously of their time to a wide variety of organizations, including the following:
Leadership Pocono
Deanna Schmoyer, a project manager in the Land Development Group of our Stroudsburg office, is a member of the 2008 class of Leadership Pocono. This organization prepares citizens to take on leadership roles in the communities of the Pocono Region and encourages them to become actively involved in other community organizations.
American Cancer Society Relay For Life
Eleven HRG employees participated in the American Cancer Society Relay For Life on July 21-22, 2007. The event took place at North Boundary Park in Cranberry Township.
Relay For Life is a non-competitive community event that brings families, friends, neighbors and co-workers together to pay tribute to those who have won the battle against cancer, as well as honor those who have lost. The 24-hr event raises money and awareness for cancer patient services and programs, public education, advocacy and research. Team HRG raised over $3,000 for the event.
Ronald McDonald House
HRG employees collected a trunk full of magazines, catalogs, and glossy papers and donated them to the Ronald McDonald House of Hershey, PA. The money raised from recycling these magazines will be used to maintain the house and support its operations.
Since 2004, Ronald McDonald House of Hershey has raised more than $15,000 and recycled close to 700 tons of paper through this program. The charity has used this money to offer temporary housing to out-of-town families whose children are being treated at the Penn State Children’s Hospital.
HRG also supports the Ronald McDonald House through donation of aluminum can pull tabs.
Habitat for Humanity
HRG served as a corporate sponsor of the 21-day build in May 2006 of a house in the City of Harrisburg. Typically, it takes months to build a Habitat house, but the 21-day build attempts to complete construction of a house in just 21 working days. As part of our support of this initiative, 11 HRG employees donated their time to volunteer at the site for construction and non-construction tasks, and the company compensated them for part of the commitment they made during company hours.
HRG landscape architect Dan Wise also works extensively with York Habitat for Humanity as a member of their Building and Site Selection Committee. In addition to prior experience volunteering at construction sites, Dan helps the committee select sites for renovating and building new homes and assists with the development of plans. He is currently working with Habitat on the development of a subdivision in Dover, PA, that will include 16 single-family, detached homes. HRG provided engineering services for the subdivision plans and also surveyed the land. For more information and photos of the Dover subdivision, click here.
Another project Dan is working on with Habitat is the construction of a community peace garden in the Old Town East neighborhood of the City of York. Dan's services included providing sketch plans and assisting with phase I of the construction. To further support the project, HRG purchased a memorial brick on site at the facility. This project is being completed with the assistance of the York YWCA and Habitat's Youth United organization for volunteers between the ages of 5 and 25. After completing phase I, a Vista volunteer working with York Habitat for Humanity sent Dan the following note of thanks:
"This project would not have happened without you. Thank you for answering all our questions and for your design ... One neighborhood youth said 'This is my garden, and nobody's gonna mess with it!' "
The Central PA Blood Bank
HRG employees have established a corporate account with the Blood Bank in which we promise to donate at least 22 pints of blood each year. This account was started in February 2001 by an employee who responded to an emergency call for blood that was badly needed in the Harrisburg area, and a number of the member employees have already donated their first gallon.
Adopt-a-Highway
Four times each year, employees from the Harrisburg, Gettysburg, and Lancaster offices don orange vests to make a one-mile stretch of the state's highway system in their respective area a cleaner place for our drivers.
Bowl for Kids' Sake
Several employees participate in this event each spring, acquiring sponsors whose donations benefit the Big Brothers Big Sisters organization. HRG also makes a corporate donation on behalf of its employees, and some of our employees are full-time big brothers and big sisters.
Salvation Army
Lancaster employees gather together their nickels and dimes each winter to purchase food that is donated to the Salvation Army at Christmas time.
